Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) In Brief: Everything About VAD

A device that is an implantable mechanical pump that helps to pump blood from the lower chambers of our heart (the ventricles) to the rest of the body is called a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). It is also known as a mechanical circulatory support device.

This Ventricular Assist Device is mainly used in the left ventricle of individuals, although this VAD is placed in the left, right, or both ventricles of the heart.

A VAD is called a left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) when placed in the heart’s left ventricle. When a patient wants a strong heart to pump blood effectively and wait for a heart transplant may have a VAD implanted in his ventricles.

If a patient is not suitable enough to transplant a heart may be recommended to implant a VAD. on the other hand, VAD may be implanted for long-term treatment of a patient after having heart failure.

It is thought to be a lifesaver for people with heart failure. A Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) is implanted by open-heart surgery. It has a serious risk too.

Types Of Ventricular Assist Device

A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a mechanical pump implanted to help a failing heart. The device takes over the work of the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber, and helps circulate blood throughout the body.

There are two common types of VADs:

1. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs): These devices are implanted on the left side of the heart and are the most common type of VAD. LVADs treat heart failure when the left ventricle cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body.

2. Right ventricular assist devices (RVADs): These devices are implanted on the right side of the heart and are used to treat heart failure when the right ventricle cannot pump enough blood to the lungs. RVADs are less common than LVADs.

VADs can be used as a short-term treatment for heart failure or as a long-term treatment. VADs can also be used as a “bridge” to a heart transplant.

VADs are powered by batteries that are implanted under the skin. The batteries need to be recharged or replaced every few months. VADs also have a computer controller that is implanted under the skin. The controller is used to adjust the pump’s speed and monitor the device.

VADs are not a cure for heart failure. But, they can improve the quality of life for people with heart failure. VADs can help people with heart failure live longer and have a better quality of life.

But there more two types of Ventricular Assist Devices available:

  1. BiVADs (devices that assist both the right and left ventricles)
  2. Total artificial hearts (TAHs)

Why Is Ventricular Assist Device Implanted?

A Ventricular Assist Device is a mechanical device implanted to support the lower left heart chamber, lower right heart chamber, or both lower chambers of the heart.

A Ventricular Assist Device may be recommended to patients for some reason. Those are briefly described below.

When A Patient Is Waiting For A Heart Transplant

When a patient is waiting for a heart donor, a Ventricular Assist Device must be implanted in this heart to keep the blood pumping usually. It is referred to as a ”bridge to transplant” when a Ventricular Assist Device is implanted in the patient’s ventricle while waiting for a heart transplant.

Despite having heart disease, this VAD will keep the blood pumping. This VAD will be removed after implanting a new heart. Besides keeping blood pumping, it will also improve the functions of other body organs.

It may also help to improve some other medical conditions of the body. When someone is not eligible for a heart transplant because of age or other conditions: When an individual has heart failure and is not eligible for a heart transplant because of age or other conditions, VAD implantation may be required. VAD implantation in the patient for this condition is known as ”destination therapy”.

The function of some other organs of the body which aren’t working accurately will improve after VAD implantation. This  VAD can also improve some other medical conditions. It can also be used as a permanent treatment.

People with heart failure who are not good candidates for heart transplantation use VAD as a long-term treatment. A patient 65 years old may not be suitable for heart transplantation. The VAD can be used as a therapy for heart failure.

Function Of The Heart Can Become Normal Again

Doctors may recommend implanting a VAD when the heart is not healthy enough to pump blood after experiencing a temporary heart failure. This is called ”a bridge of recovery”. VAD may also be implanted for a short time (for a few weeks or months) after having surgery on the heart.

It will help to flow blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. Doctors may also recommend an artificial heart when VAD can’t help the heart. This treatment is generally applied to a patient with very severe heart conditions and conditions that haven’t improved through other treatments.

Ventricular Assist Device Vs. Pacemaker

Ventricular assist devices (VADs) and pacemakers are two different devices that are used to treat heart failure. VADs are used to help pump blood from the heart, while pacemakers are used to help control the heartbeat.

VADs and pacemakers have risks, but they are generally safe and effective treatments for heart failure. VADs are typically used to treat heart failure when the heart is too weak to pump blood on its own.

VADs can be used as a short-term treatment, or they can be used long-term. Pacemakers are typically used to treat heart failure when the heart cannot maintain a regular heartbeat.

Some risks are associated with VADs and pacemakers: VADs can cause bleeding and infection. Pacemakers can cause electrical shocks and burns. However, the benefits of these devices generally outweigh the risks.
